West Africa's Unbreakable Mercedes Taxi
His Mercedes 190 doesn't like the heat, but then neither does taxi driver Issiaka Zoungrana.
But he loves his old Sweetheart. And whoever loves, pushes through the difficult times, his resourceful nature means the two can carry on regardless of the obstacles.
For two decades the pair have been trying to earn a living on the streets of Ouagadougou. His German car has clocked over 1 million kilometers and there is life still left in his beloved machine. Issiaka has become self-sufficient when it comes to his prized car, able to repair on the fly. Against all odds, the two continue.
This is a tale of loyalty and resilience.

‘Spinning’, Johannesburg, South Africa | Car subcultures
Around the world, communities have used cars in different and creative ways to express their own individual and group identities.
‘Spinning’ involves performing dangerous stunts, whilst a car – ideally a BMW 325i – is spun around in circles at high speed. The drivers lock the car into a spin and then, in clouds of smoke and squealing tyres, climbs out of the car or even hangs backwards out of the window with their head almost brushing the ground.
Spinning has its roots in the early 1980s in Soweto, Johannesburg, where gangsters and criminals would steal cars to spin at the funerals of dead friends. It is now the fastest growing motor sport in South Africa with a new generation pushing to make it mainstream.

'Time bomb': The used cars causing pollution and accidents in Africa • FRANCE 24 English
Every year, around four to five million used cars are shipped to Africa, mostly from Europe, North America and Japan, to be sold in countries where newer vehicles are too expensive for most. But these old cars, often in poor condition, are also bringing high levels of pollution to the continent, as well as causing accidents on the roads. Some are now campaigning for governments to take action.

Stacey-lee May, AKA ‘Queen of Smoke’, is a 23-year-old law student and one of South African’s top female motorsport sensations. Her introduction to spinning came from being bullied in High School, and at the age of 16, her father decided to teach her how to spin in order to boost her confidence.
“I just want to show the youth of the world that you don’t have to be stuck in a box…you can do anything you heart tells you to do”.
This film was produced as part of Cars: Accelerating the Modern World (23 November 2019 – 19 April 2020)
